Heatwave Sage
Salvia microphylla Heatwave
Salvia microphylla Heatwave™ Series is a compact, semi-evergreen shrub prized for its deep red flowers, dark calyxes, and exceptional heat tolerance. This member of the Heatwave™ Series is bred to thrive in hot, dry conditions, forming a dense, rounded, mounding shrub of small, oval, aromatic, bright green leaves. From summer through fall, it produces an abundance of upright stems bearing large, two-lipped, tubular flowers in a vivid, deep crimson-red, emerging from contrasting darker red to burgundy calyxes, which extends the color interest even after the petals drop. The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. With its compact, uniform habit, excellent heat and drought tolerance, deer resistance, and long bloom season, it is an outstanding choice for sunny borders, mass plantings, containers, rock gardens, and water-wise landscapes.
