Cerro Potosi Sage
Salvia microphylla ‘Cerro Potosi’
Salvia microphylla 'Cerro Potosi' is a classic, upright evergreen shrub prized for its profuse, bright magenta-red flowers, long bloom season, and aromatic blackcurrant-scented foliage. This hybrid-type (greggii type) forms a dense, bushy, upright mound of small, oval, light to medium green leaves that release a delightful, fruity fragrance reminiscent of blackcurrants (or blackcurrant bubblegum) when brushed. From early summer through fall, and often until the first hard frost, it produces an abundance of tall, branched stems bearing large, two-lipped, tubular flowers in a brilliant, deep magenta-red to bright pink, with subtle color shifts throughout the season. The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. With excellent heat and drought tolerance once established, deer resistance, and a tidy, upright habit, it is an outstanding choice for sunny borders, mass plantings, containers, cottage gardens, and pollinator gardens.
