Claremont Pink Flowering Currant
Ribes sanguineum glutinosum ‘Claremont’
Ribes sanguineum glutinosum 'Claremont' is a vigorous, deciduous shrub prized for its spectacular, pendulous clusters of bright, clear pink flowers and attractive, fragrant foliage. A selection of the California native coastal flowering currant, this garden favorite produces an abundance of showy, 2-4 inch long racemes of soft pink to rose-pink, tubular flowers that hang gracefully from the branches in early to mid-spring . The flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. The aromatic, lobed, dark green leaves have a fuzzy texture and serrated margins, turning attractive shades of yellow to red in autumn before falling. The flowers are followed by small, black-blue berries with a waxy bloom in summer, which provide food for birds. With its upright, vase-shaped habit and excellent drought tolerance once established, it is a superb choice for wildlife gardens, native plantings, mixed borders, and as an informal hedge or specimen.
