Album Catawba Rhododendron
Rhododendron catawbiense ‘Album’
Rhododendron catawbiense 'Album' is a classic, hardy evergreen shrub prized for its large trusses of pure white flowers with subtle yellow-green spotting and exceptional cold tolerance. A selection of the native Catawba rhododendron, this reliable hybrid forms a dense, rounded, upright to spreading mound of large, leathery, elliptic, medium green leaves that remain attractive year-round. In mid to late spring, it produces impressive, dome-shaped trusses of broadly funnel-shaped, frilled, pure white flowers with delicate pale yellow to greenish spotting in the throat, creating a clean, luminous display that attracts butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds . With outstanding cold hardiness (to -20°F), good sun and heat tolerance, and adaptability to a range of conditions, it is an excellent choice for foundation plantings, woodland gardens, shaded borders, informal hedges, mass plantings, screens, and white-themed (moonlight) gardens.
