Rupturewort
Herniaria glabra, Green Carpet
Rupturewort, botanically known as Herniaria, is a fine-textured, mat-forming ground cover valued for its durability and subtle beauty. Unlike traditional lawns, it stays extremely low to the ground, spreads evenly, and requires minimal water once established. Its tiny green leaves create a smooth, carpet-like surface that works especially well between stepping stones, along pathways, and in modern or Mediterranean garden designs.
In California landscapes, Rupturewort is often used as a lawn alternative in low-traffic areas or as a filler plant where turf struggles.
