Pacific Sunset Hybrid Flannel Bush
Fremontodendron ‘Pacific Sunset’, Fremontia
Pacific Sunset Hybrid Flannel Bush is a spectacular California native hybrid that creates a breathtaking display of fiery color in the spring garden. In mid to late spring, it becomes blanketed with large, saucer-shaped, brilliant golden-yellow flowers that glow against its dark green, deeply lobed leaves. The foliage and stems are covered in a dense, fuzzy indumentum that gives the plant its "flannel" name and a beautiful tactile quality. Fast-growing and incredibly drought-tolerant once established, it is a dramatic and architectural choice for sunny slopes, dry gardens, and areas where its expansive, sculptural form can be appreciated.
-
Spectacular Golden Spring Bloom: Produces a massive, eye-catching display of large (2-3 inch), satiny, golden-yellow flowers that nearly cover the plant in spring.
-
Exceptional Drought Tolerance: A true champion of dry gardens. Once established, it requires little to no summer water and thrives in poor, rocky, well-drained soils.
-
Fast-Growing & Architectural: Grows rapidly into a large, spreading shrub or small tree with a strong, angular branch structure, making it a striking focal point.
-
California Native & Habitat Value: Provides valuable early-season nectar for native bees and other pollinators.
-
Caution: The fuzzy hairs on leaves and stems can be a severe skin and eye irritant for some people. Wear gloves and long sleeves when handling.
